Summer in Zurich 2026 – Best Activities & Tips

June 2025 · 7 min read

Zurich in summer is a completely different city from the sleek banking metropolis people imagine. From June to September, the lake becomes the city's living room, the river fills with floating rings and unicorns, rooftop bars open up, and the city hosts some of Europe's best outdoor events. Here's everything you need to know.

The Limmat Böötle - Zurich's Most Beloved Tradition

If you do one thing in Zurich in summer, make it the Böötle. Thousands of locals drift 7 km down the Limmat River on inflatable rings, boats, and unicorn floats every weekend from June to September. It's relaxed, sociable, and uniquely Swiss. Rent your equipment from Smile Swim at Wipkingerweg 6 - 2 minutes from the river entry at Wipkingerpark.

Lake Swimming (Badi Culture)

Zurich's Badis - public lakeside swimming areas - are a cornerstone of summer life. Utoquai and Seebad Enge on the west shore, Tiefenbrunnen and Strandbad Mythenquai are popular choices. Most charge a small entry fee (around CHF 8). The lake water is crystal clear and swimmable from around mid-June, reaching 22-24°C by August. Paddleboarding from the Badis is also possible - rent a SUP from Smile Swim and take it by train.

Major Summer Events

Outdoor Activities

Paddleboarding: The Greifensee (30 min by S-Bahn) is perfect for beginners - no motorboats, flat water, stunning nature. Lake Zurich is excellent for more experienced paddlers. Rent an inflatable SUP from Smile Swim that packs into a backpack - take it anywhere.

Hiking: Uetliberg, Zurich's local mountain (30 min from HB by S10), offers panoramic views and good trails. The walk from Uetliberg station to Felsenegg along the Planet Trail takes about 2 hours and finishes with a cable car descent to Adliswil.

Cycling: The lake promenade is excellent for cycling. PubliBike e-bike rental stations are all over the city. The ride around part of Lake Zurich's western shore is beautiful and not too strenuous.

Weather & What to Expect

Zurich summers are warm but not extreme - typically 22-28°C in July and August, with long daylight hours (light until after 9 PM). Expect some rain - Swiss summer weather is variable. Pack a light rain layer even in the height of summer. Thunderstorms can arrive quickly, especially in the afternoon.

💡 Best months: July and August for guaranteed warmth and all events open. June and September are less crowded and still excellent - the Böötle runs until early September.

Zurich West in Summer

The former industrial district west of the Hauptbahnhof transforms in summer. Frau Gerolds Garten is an outdoor bar and food market that perfectly captures Zurich's mix of creative energy and relaxed pleasure - try to visit on a warm summer evening. Im Viadukt market and Hardbrücke area are worth exploring.

Summer highlight: floating the Limmat. See our SUP rental Zurich catalog - boards, rings, boats and floats to make your day on the water.
