SUP für Anfänger: Alles was du wissen musst

April 2025 · 7 Min. Lesezeit

Stand-up paddleboarding looks impressive but it's genuinely one of the most accessible water sports there is. Most complete beginners are standing and paddling confidently within 15-20 minutes. Here's what you need to know before your first session in Zurich.

Why an Inflatable SUP Is Perfect for Beginners

Hard fibreglass boards are faster and more responsive, but inflatable boards are softer, more stable, and much more forgiving when you fall off - which you will, at least a few times. Our Aqua Marina Vapor boards are specifically designed to be stable and easy to learn on.

The inflatable construction also means you can roll them up, pack them in a backpack, and take them anywhere by public transport. No car needed, no roof rack, no stress.

We offer the Vapor in three sizes - S (30-60 kg), M (60-90 kg), and L (90-120 kg) - so you'll always be on the right board for your weight.

Getting Started: Your First 20 Minutes

Start on your knees. Before you try to stand, spend a few minutes paddling on your knees to get a feel for how the board moves and responds. Kneel with one knee either side of the handle in the centre of the board.

Stand up slowly. Place your hands on the board beside your knees, then bring one foot up at a time to where your knee was. Stand up slowly, looking at the horizon rather than down at your feet.

Bend your knees slightly. A small bend acts as a natural shock absorber and gives you much better balance than standing with straight legs. This is the most important technique tip for beginners.

Keep your feet parallel, about hip-width apart, centred on the board over the handle. Don't stand too far forward or back.

Look at the horizon - not at the board, not at the water. Your body follows your eyes, and looking at a fixed point in the distance helps enormously with balance.

Paddling Technique

Hold the paddle with one hand on the T-grip at the top and one hand about halfway down the shaft. The blade should angle forward away from you.

To paddle forward, reach the blade forward, plant it fully in the water, and pull it back toward your feet. Take it out of the water when it reaches your feet - going further is wasted effort. Switch sides every 4-6 strokes to go in a straight line.

To turn, paddle on one side only. For a quicker turn, sweep the paddle in a wide arc from the front of the board out to the side and back.

💡 The single best tip: Keep your core engaged and your paddle blade fully submerged during each stroke. Most beginners use their arms only - the real power comes from rotating your torso.

When You Fall Off (You Will)

Falling is part of learning and part of the fun. When you feel yourself going, aim to fall away from the board rather than on it. The board is a large solid object and landing on it is more painful than landing in the water.

To get back on, swim to the side of the board (not the end), grab the handle in the centre, kick your legs to the surface, and pull yourself up sideways. It's easier than it sounds after the first time.

Safety Essentials

What to Wear

In summer (June-September), swimwear or board shorts and a rash guard or light t-shirt is perfect. The water is warm enough that getting wet is no issue. A waterproof layer is useful for windier days. Water shoes or old trainers are good for the entry and exit points.
